Kids In The Middle Selects 2016 Champion of Kids Award Winner

Non-profit nominates Geotechnology President as recipient 

Kids In The Middle (KITM) recently announced Ed Alizadeh, President of Geotechnology, Inc., as its 2016 Champion of Kids honoree.  The Champion of Kids nominating committee selected Alizadeh for this prestigious award because of his considerable dedication to children in the community and his commitment to Kids In The Middle.

Alizadeh served on the KITM Board of Directors 2000-2008 and was President from 2005-2007.  He currently serves on the KITM Advisory Council. Because of his leadership and efforts, Ed has raised over $235,000, enough to provide group counseling to over 3,200 children.

“We are absolutely thrilled with the nominating committee’s choice for our agency’s most distinguished award,” said CEO Meredith Friedman.  “Ed has had a true impact by helping children “in the middle” of their parents’ divorce.”

Home Builders Association Donates $14,000 to Beyond Housing

On behalf of the Home Builders Charitable Foundation (HBCF), 2016 HBA President Kim Hibbs of Hibbs Homes (left) presented a $14,000 donation to Jaqueline Hamilton, chief development officer for Beyond Housing.

The donation will be used to complete repairs in several of Beyond Housing’s rental properties to bring the homes up to quality living standards. Most homes are in need of full paint jobs, light fixtures, new blinds, floor tiles, exterior tuck-pointing, porch rebuilds and an overall general modernization. The homes in their portfolio are generally two- and three-bedroom homes that can house up to six people. Beyond Housing’s mission is to help entire communities become better places to live by providing affordable housing. It is a community development organization that works in defined geographies like the Normandy School District in order to focus its resources where they can have the greatest impact.

The HBA is a local trade association of more than 500 member firms representing the residential construction industry. The Home Builders Charitable Foundation, the HBA’s charitable arm, is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing housing assistance to people or organizations with special shelter needs.

Paraquad to Kick Off Construction of $3.3 Million Accessible Health and Wellness Center

Paraquad on Tuesday officially began construction of its new Accessible Health and Wellness Center. The 22,000-square-foot Center will feature specialized equipment that enables people with disabilities to work out and highly trained staff who are experts in helping people with all types of disabilities meet their fitness needs. Paraquad is the only organization in St. Louis providing this type of facility. In collaboration with our partners at Washington University School of Medicine and Logan University, Paraquad is expanding the range of services available for people with disabilities and helping to train the next generation of healthcare providers. The total project cost for construction of the Center is $3.3 million. It is scheduled to open in June 2016.

The Leadership Council Southwestern Illinois is beginning the New Year with new board leadership. Members in December unanimously approved five new officers to serve one-year terms, including Mark Turner as the president of the organization. Turner, president of Memorial Hospital, most recently served as the Leadership Council’s vice president. Michael Riley, immediate past president, has moved into the role of chairman. The complete slate of officers chosen includes:

  • Chairman – Michael Riley, President, Professional Therapy Services, Inc.
  • President – Mark Turner, President, Memorial Hospital
  • Vice President – Keith Cook, Market President, Southwest Illinois for Regions Bank in Belleville
  • Secretary – Dale Stewart, Executive Secretary, Southwestern Illinois Building and Construction Trades Council
  • Treasurer – Don Vichitvongsa, General Manager of SunCoke Energy in Granite City

As president of the Leadership Council, Turner will help guide the work of the premier organization uniting the Southwestern Illinois region for economic growth.

“Through its expansive network of 200-plus members, the Leadership Council continues bringing together regional leaders in business, industry, government, education and labor, who share a common desire to position Madison and St. Clair counties for continued growth,” notes Turner. “This past year saw terrific progress on many fronts, from accelerating efforts to position our region as a multimodal hub to the continued growth around Scott Air Force Base, as well as the work underway to support our manufacturing base and advance entrepreneurship in our region. With improvements to the Metro East levee system on target for completion in the coming months, and a decision due in March regarding the new location for the NGA headquarters, it’s an exciting time for our region. I look forward to collaborating with our dedicated staff and members to keep the momentum going.”

The Southern Illinois Builders Association projected that they would receive approximately 1,066 new projects in 2015. As of December 31, 2015, “I am pleased to report that the Association had received 1,246 new projects for calendar year 2015 which is approximately 17% more new projects than anticipated,” said Donna Richter, Chief Executive Officer of SIBA. The total amount of the projects awarded in 2015 is in excess of $862,156,530. The projected goals for 2016 are to increase that project total by at least 5%.

The Southern Illinois Builders Association is a trade association representing 500 plus: commercial contractors; industrial construction companies; building contractors; highway construction companies; utility construction contractors; subcontractors; suppliers; and serviced oriented companies throughout the southern 39 counties in Illinois.

AIA St. Louis Installs David Kehm as 2016 President

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) St. Louis Chapter Announces David W. Kehm, AIA of Christner Inc. as 2016 President.

AIA St. Louis recently installed David W. Kehm, AIA of Christner Inc. as the 2016 President to head the nearly 800 members of the local chapter of the national organization.  Architect Kehm will lead AIA St. Louis Chapter in 2016 with the call for ever-growing collaboration between design and construction professionals and their respective organizations.

Architect Kehm is a graduate of Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, with a bachelor in Architecture and has served on the Board of Directors of Food Outreach in St. Louis.   In the past, David Kehm has served AIA St. Louis as Director, Treasurer and President-Elect before serving his one year term in 2016 as President.  Kehm is employed as the Corporate Market Leader in his role as Associate Principal at Christner Inc.

COCA Elects 2016 Board of Director & Officers

During its Council of Owners and Construction Associates December 10, 2015 Board of Director’s meeting, Mr. Kenneth B. Pollmann, General Manager Power Operations, Prairie State Generating Co., LLC; was elected as the new Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Council of Owners and Construction Associates, Inc. (COCA, Inc.).

Also, elected as the Vice –Chairman was Mr. Jonathan A. Bach, Mechanical Integrity Specialist Engineer, Afton Chemical Corporation; and elected as the Secretary/Treasurer was Mr. Joseph Wickenhauser, Safety Excellence Coordinator, Olin Brass Fabricated Products.

COCA, Inc., located in Maryville, Illinois is the local Construction User Council serving the Metro-East area of Southwestern Illinois, and is affiliated with the Construction Users Roundtable (CURT). The primary purpose of COCA is to increase safety awareness; and the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the Construction Industry.

COCA’s membership includes the area’s major Industries and Utilities and over 130 construction firms who perform construction and maintenance services for these industries.
