Habitat For Humanity Restore Accepts Tax-Deductable Construction Donations To Raise Funds For New Housing

Habitat ReStores sell quality, used and surplus building materials at a fraction of normal prices. Proceeds from ReStores help fund the construction of Habitat houses within the St. Louis area community. Many Habitat affiliates across the United States and Canada operate successful ReStores. St. Louis is home to two of these stores, which fund three Habitat homes each year.

The first St. Louis ReStore opened for business in June 1997 (now at 3763 Forest Park Ave. St. Louis, 63108).  At the time, it was the third ReStore in the Habitat Central States region. In July 2013, St. Louis opened its second ReStore location (2117 Sams Dr. Des Peres, 63131).

“We accept donations of new and reusable building materials and home remodeling supplies,” stated Josh Vaughn, ReStore General Manager. “In general, we accept items that are in good, working condition that our customers might be interested in giving a new home.”

Materials sold by Habitat ReStores are usually donated from building supply stores, contractors, demolition crews, and from individuals who wish to show their support for Habitat. In addition to raising funds, ReStores help the environment by rechanneling good, usable materials back into use.  Since its inception, the St. Louis ReStore program has diverted more than 33,000 tons of materials from the landfill.

Over the years, the ReStore’s staff has had more success connecting with commercial donors who can supply large quantities of like materials so the mix of merchandise keeps improving.
“Strengthening our relationship with the St. Louis building community is key to obtain donations and in turn providing affordable housing,” stated Vaughn. The ReStore is constantly looking for donations. They have the capability to pick-up larger donations and donors receive a tax-deduction letter in return.

New items are delivered daily to the stores, and the ReStore staff often sees the same customers coming back week after week. “They are intrigued by what the ReStore has to offer,” said Vaughn. “With new inventory arriving daily, you never know what treasures you will find.”
