Paul Toenjes, AICP, ASLA, Senior Associate Will Open New Studio
SWT Design announced at their Spring Garden Party event last night, that they are opening a studio in Louisville, Kentucky this July. This expansion to Louisville will be headed by Paul Toenjes, AICP, ASLA, Senior Associate. SWT Design is excited about the opportunity to continue to expand their reach through geographic expansion. The firm opened a Kansas City office in August 2016 which continues to flourish. Paul Toenjes will still collaborate and lead projects within our St. Louis studios as needed but is looking forward to collaborating with clients and industry partners in the Louisville community.
“When I moved to Louisville nearly 15 years ago, it was because I had heard rumors about a funky and exciting city that was very much under the radar. The welcoming I received was like nothing I had ever experienced. It’s a city with a great culture of design and planning, and I am looking forward to being a part it.” –Paul Toenjes
Before his switch to landscape architecture and planning, Paul worked as a bilingual instructor in an elementary school in Louisville, Kentucky. Concerned over the lack of green space and safe parks available to his students, he turned to the profession of landscape architecture. This led Paul to earn a Masters of Landscape Architecture from Louisiana State University. He practiced in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Louisiana prior to his return to St. Louis. Since 2012, Paul has served as studio and project manager with SWT Design. He has been integral in projects that address many contemporary planning and design challenges, from economic development and transportation, to green infrastructure, placemaking and sustainable site design.
Since joining SWT Design in 2015, Paul has worked on projects throughout all phases of design in both the public and private sectors, including corporate campuses, parks and recreation, and civic amenities. His recent project experience includes Great Rivers Greenway District Design Guidelines, design and planning for the Cortex Innovation Community, master planning for Echo Bluff State Park, and design for the Boneyard Creek North Branch in Champaign, Illinois. Paul is currently leading the design and redevelopment of the East Waterways in Forest Park. He’s also received awards for his work including in 2016 St. Louis ASLA Merit Award for Sustainability Redeveloping a Historic District – Old North St. Louis and in 2015 Central States ASLA Honor Award – The Commons at Cortex.
For nearly 25 years, SWT Design has developed a diverse and award-winning portfolio of outdoor spaces, approaching planning and design as a living, breathing thing with a passion for innovation. The firm’s team of 22 landscape architects, urban designers, and planners has become leaders in their respective professions, creating value with each design while focusing on environmental responsibility, social justice, and economic improvement. SWT Design has grown to become one of the largest stand-alone disciplines of its kind in the Midwest. As a strong proponent of sustainable design, the firm was at the forefront of developing the Sustainable Sites Initiative, working closely alongside other founding partners and agencies to develop what has become the world’s first comprehensive rating system for the design, development, and management of sustainable landscapes around the globe.
