Ranken Partners with SSM Health to Train Stationary Engineers

Through a partnership with Ranken Technical College, nine SSM Health plant operations employees recently graduated with Stationary Engineering certificates.

Ranken worked with SSM Health in designing and delivering a customized program with classes conveniently located at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon’s Children Hospital in the City of St. Louis. Participants were eligible for SSM Health tuition reimbursement and met weekly for two semesters.

Stationary engineers play important roles in installing, maintaining, repairing and restoring high pressure and low pressure boilers, steam engines, pumps, ammonia systems and other necessary facility equipment. The City of St. Louis requires that employees in these areas have stationary engineering licenses, which includes five years of boiler experience. Ranken’s class provides the necessary training while it shortens that required boiler room experience.

Stationary engineers are especially important in the expanding health care field, where providers are building many new facilities and also replacing older equipment with the most up-to-date technologies.

“This program benefits all parties,” said Ranken Dean of Continuing Education and Workplace Development Keyvan Gerami. “Many SSM Health employees want more technical training and education but have limited time and resources. Ranken is dedicated to working with companies to offer flexible, innovative programs that help employees to learn while they work. SSM Health is helping employees improve their skill sets which will then result in better operations and services.”

If they have an interest, graduates with Stationary Engineering certifications can apply their course credits toward a Ranken associate degree and/or bachelor degree.

In the fall, in addition to continuing its Stationary Engineering certification program, SSM Health and Ranken will begin an HVACR certification program that will help to develop the skills of employees in this important field, as well.
