A national industry survey of major U.S. cities ranks St. Louis second highest in terms of being a “best city” for construction work.
According to construction insurance provider Next Insurance, St. Louis scored 37.8 out of 50, second only to Chicago, based upon these seven factors: weather, average annual salary, area job competition, number of open federal government contracts, number of open and ongoing local construction projects, cost of living and overall unemployment rate.
The survey was performed in September 2020.
St. Louis’ average annual construction salary of more than $63,000 and its $1.75 billion open contract for Next NGA West buoyed its ranking.
Next Insurance also ranked St. Louis City as the number-one small city (under 350,000 population), with a score of 41.8 out of 50, in these three areas specifically: average annual construction salary (4.4 out of 5), number of open federal government contracts (5.0 out of 5) and number of open and ongoing local construction projects (4.6 out of 5). St. Louis’ #1 small city ranking nearly doubles that of Salt Lake City, the city with the second-most open construction contracts from the federal government.
In addition to the new NGA headquarters under construction, other projects contributing to St. Louis’ high ranking, according to Next Insurance, were the Major League Soccer stadium project and St. Louis’ upcoming Chouteau Greenway project.
