Holocaust Museum Addition Opens Nov. 2

Visitors will be able to see the greatly expanded St. Louis Kaplan Feldman Holocaust Museum Nov. 2 when its new addition opens.

The $21 million project, designed by TR,i Architects and built by A.J. Brown, Inc. Construction Services, triples the size of the existing museum. O’Toole Design Associates is the interior designer. Gallagher & Associates is the exhibit installer.

The museum is located at 36 Millstone Campus Drive in Creve Coeur. Its new entrance faces Lindbergh Boulevard.

Construction began in November 2020 on the addition, which is connected to the original museum space. A.J. Brown President Doug Rendleman says the façade is built with 3×8-foot large format tile, a synthetic stone material that also weaves inside to the ceiling interior and one of the museum’s large walls. The undulating design, he says, honors and remembers the Kristallnacht or Night of the Broken Glass in November 1938 when 30,000 Jews were sent to concentration camps, and many of them murdered.

The museum addition features numerous interactive and experiential learning opportunities, digital and traditional media, a multipurpose space for films, workshops, community discussions and traveling exhibits, survivor galleries, the preservation and display of rare and valuable artifacts, and a learning center for school groups.

Construction is wrapping up on a new 35,000-square-foot building as part of an expansion that will triple the size of the St. Louis Kaplan Feldman Holocaust Museum.

The museum, which is owned by the Jewish Federation of St. Louis, is located on the northwest corner of Lindbergh Blvd. and Schuetz Rd. The $21 million project includes Chesterfield-based A.J. Brown, Inc. Construction Services and St. Louis-based TR,i Architects.

Work began in November 2020 on the museum addition, which is connected to the original museum space. The existing space is being completely renovated. In addition to exhibit spaces, the new facility will include a 250-seat multipurpose auditorium.

A.J. Brown anticipates completing construction of the expansion in July. Then the museum’s designer, Silver Spring, Maryland-based Gallagher & Associates, will begin installing the exhibits, many of which will feature interactive and experiential learning opportunities.

St. Louis-based O’Toole Design Associates designed the museum’s interiors. Avison Young’s Chris Slagle has served as the museum’s owners representative and project manager.

The renovated, expanded museum is anticipated to open in late August or early September. It is one of 22 Holocaust museums in the United States.

In their first venture as developers, two eye specialists are building a three-story, multi-tenant Class A office building along Illinois West Highway 50 that broke ground late last year and is aiming for completion in September.

Optometrist Dr. Joshua Wilson of Advanced Vision Care and Ophthalmologist Dr. Michael Stock of Ideal Eye Surgery are developing 36,525 square feet at 821 West Highway 50, one-half mile from HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in O’Fallon, IL. The two medical professionals will move respective practices to the new location.

The Striler Group served as owner’s rep, IMPACT Strategies is the construction manager and TR,i Architects is the designer.

Richard Striler, president of The Striler Group, said his company has served many entrepreneurial clients through the years, those who are designing and building projects either for their own use or as an investment.

Dr. Wilson said the opportunity to build new and to be part of the growing O’Fallon community made sense.

“When Dr. Stock and I started this project, we went from a couple of single-story buildings to what is being built today,” said Wilson. “This location deserved a Class A professional/medical building.”

Wilson added that the project marks only the beginning of further development along this busy stretch of West Highway 50.

Mark Hinrichs, president of Fairview Heights-based IMPACT Strategies, said he is particularly enthusiastic about spearheading the construction of a Class A office development in his hometown.

“It is particularly gratifying for me as an original resident of O’Fallon, Illinois, to continue to participate in its growth with this stellar new project,” said Hinrichs. “Doctors Wilson and Stock have great vision for the growth potential of their practices in this new strategic location.”
